Vocabulary

Readers are expected to carry their understanding of vocabulary from one section or page to the next. For example, on one spread of Wild Wetlands by Janine Scott, the word aquatic is used early on in one context but then later in a different context and without support to figure out its meaning—the definition must be retained and applied to a new situation.

Earthquakes by Trudy Strain Trueit contains a glossary with definitions of key terms (i.e., earthquake, tremor, and magnitude), but many other terms and concepts that a reader needs to already know or figure out from context are not defined (i.e., vibrations, energy is released, jolt hit, foundations, toppling like dominoes).

Look for students to:

○ Explain or describe the meaning of a word or phrase using larger context, including text features, and demonstrate deep understanding of the word or phrase.
